The Golden Fronted Woodpecker (Melanerpes aurifrons) is a Central Texas cavity nesting woodpecker. The head feathers are bright red, orange and yellow. It is named for the few light yellow feathers low on the belly. These birds can be found searching tree bark for inscects. I've also observed this woodpecker flying with whole pecans! After moving the pecan nuts, the woodpecker placed them in holes to limit movement during pecking |
